How do we use ‘few’ and ‘few of the’? Can you please give some examples? (asked by Pretty)
‘Few’ and ‘few of the’ are called quantifiers. We use quantifiers when we want to give someone information about the number of something: how much or how many.
‘Few’ is used when you are talking about members of a group in general.
Few snakes are dangerous.
Here you say ‘snakes’ in general.
‘Few of the’ is used when you are talking about a specific group of people or things.
Few of the snakes are dangerous.
Here you are talking about snakes of a particular group, maybe, snakes in a particular location or in an island or in a particular forest.
Do you understand the difference between ‘few snakes are dangerous’ and ‘few of the snakes are dangerous’?
Have a good day.
What are the different types of sentences?
A sentence is a group of words, which makes complete sense. A sentence is divided into two major parts: the Subject and the Predicate.
‘My friend gave me a watch’
In the above sentence, ‘My friend’ is the subject and ‘gave me a watch’ is the predicate. The subject denotes the person or thing about which something is said. The predicate is what is said about the subject. The subject may consist of several words of which only one is more important. In the above example, the noun ‘friend’ is more important. The predicate may consist one word or more of which the verb is more important. In the above example the verb ‘gave’ is more important.
A Simple Sentence is one which has only one subject and one predicate.
‘My friend gave me a watch’ has only one subject and one predicate. Therefore, it is a simple sentence.
A Compound Sentence is one made up of two or more Principal or Main Clauses.
‘The sun was bright and we could move out’
The above sentence consists of two parts:
1. The sun was bright
2. we could move out
The two parts are joined by a coordinating conjunction ‘and’.
Each part contains a subject and a predicate of its own. Each part is called a Clause. These two clauses make complete sense and can stand by themselves as separate sentences. Therefore, they are called principal or main clauses.
A Complex Sentence consists of one principal clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
‘They had food when evening came’
In the above sentence, there are two parts.
1. They had food
2. when evening came
Each part has a subject and a predicate and each is a clause. If you notice, the first clause can stand as a separate sentence whereas the second cannot. The first clause is the principal or main clause and the second one is the subordinate clause, which is dependent upon the first clause.
